Linguistics and Literature Association (LITA)


English Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta hold English Webinar Series with the theme Gender, Racism, and Terrorism in collaboration with Linguistics and Literature Association (LITA). The event dated August 12, 2020, using the online media platform, Zoom Cloud Meeting. In this event, the committee invited DR. Barsihannor, M.Ag, the Chair of ADIA (Association of Adab Lecturer in Indonesia) as keynote speaker, Dr. Witriani, M.Hum, the Director of P2GH UIN Yogyakarta as a speaker, and Maria Ulfa, M.Hum, Lecturer of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta as a speaker. The webinar was led by Innayatul Chusna, M.Hum, the lecturer of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta roled as moderator.

The webinar was incredibly interesting as the speakers talked their expertise relate to the theme of the Webinar. Dr Witriani, M.Hum focused her speech on gender as a social construction that always changes over time. She said that the gender construction relay on biological construction, social construction, and religious teaching.  Further, she discussed more the representation of women in the West, Ancient, The East, and the representation of women in films and children Literature. She stated that political power rest upon the cultural representation. She added that mostly, women are represented concerning reproductive and maternal function.

The second speaker, Maria Ulfa, M.Hum, presented Terrorism Literature and Countering Violence Extremism. She explored the terrorism in the field of literature. Within the works of literature, the image of literature is divided into; before 9/11 and after 9/11. She said that the image of terrorism represented in literature is not linked to a particular group or religion but with various identities. Meanwhile, after 9/11, the image of terrorism is linked to Islam or Arabs.  Besides, she discussed more the topics on terrorism literature, the involvement of women in terrorism literature, and countering violent extremism (terrorism or political violence).

The topics delivered by the speakers are expanding the knowledge about gender and terrorism in literature. By organizing this kind of event, English Literature Department, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta allow all practitioners and academician to join scientific discussion related to English Literature.
